Am I in a Situationship Quiz: 12 Honest Questions
This am I in a situationship quiz has 12 yes-or-no questions. Answer them about one person, count your "yes" answers, and check your score below. As a rule of thumb, if you spend real time together, act like a couple in private, but have never agreed what you are or where it is going, you are probably in a situationship.
If the result leaves you more confused about how you actually feel, Find where you stand: The Map maps your own pattern with this person in about three minutes, which is the half of the question a quiz like this cannot answer.
What a situationship is (and is not)
A situationship is a connection that has some of the features of a relationship (regular contact, closeness, often physical intimacy, sometimes real feelings) but no agreed label, commitment or direction.
That is the situationship meaning in plain terms. What defines a situationship is not how casual it is. Plenty of situationships feel intense. What defines it is the missing agreement.
It is not a situationship if:
- You both clearly want something casual and have said so. That is casual dating, and it can be perfectly healthy.
- You have only been talking for a couple of weeks. That is the talking stage.
- You have agreed you are exclusive and together, even without a big announcement.
Examples of a situationship
- You have been seeing each other every weekend for four months, but neither of you has asked "what are we."
- They call you their "person" but introduce you to friends as "a friend."
- You text every day, sleep over often, and have never met each other's families, and any mention of the future gets a joke.
- You are long distance, talk for hours, and have never discussed whether either of you is seeing anyone else. (More on that in long distance situationship signs.)
The 12-question quiz
Answer each question with a simple yes or no, thinking about one specific person. Go with your first honest answer, not the one you wish were true.
- Have you been seeing or talking to this person regularly for more than six weeks?
- Have you avoided asking "what are we?" because you are worried about the answer?
- Do you feel unsure whether they are seeing or talking to anyone else?
- Do plans mostly happen last minute, rather than being made days ahead?
- Would you hesitate to call them your boyfriend, girlfriend or partner to a friend?
- Have they deflected, joked about or changed the subject when the future came up?
- Do you mostly see each other alone, rarely with friends or family?
- Do you feel you need to be "chill" and not show how much you care?
- Do you check your phone more than usual waiting for their reply?
- Has either of you said something like "let's not put a label on it"?
- Would it hurt a lot if they started officially dating someone else tomorrow?
- Do you feel like you are waiting for something to change?
Write down your total number of "yes" answers.
Scoring: what your answers suggest
This is a self-check, not a diagnosis. It points in a direction; it cannot read the other person's mind.
| Your "yes" count | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| 0 to 3 | Probably not a situationship. Either it is early days, or things are clearer than you think. |
| 4 to 7 | Situationship territory. There is closeness without clarity, and some questions need asking. |
| 8 to 12 | Very likely a situationship, and it may be costing you peace of mind. |
Look at which questions you said yes to
The total matters less than the pattern. Questions 2, 3, 5, 6 and 10 are about the situation: the missing label and commitment. Questions 8, 9, 11 and 12 are about you: how much you are investing and how anxious it feels.
- Mostly situation questions? The connection is unclear, but you may be fairly calm about it. A direct conversation is your next step.
- Mostly "you" questions? You may be more invested than the arrangement supports. That is worth taking seriously, even if you are not ready to change anything.
A quiz counts answers once. It cannot tell you whether your worry is about this person or about how you tend to love in general, and that is exactly where people go round in circles. The Map asks 18 taps about how you react when they go quiet, after an argument and when things are good, places your dot, then gives you a four-tap re-map every Sunday so you can see whether it is shifting. Situationship vs talking stage vs relationship
People often mix these up. Here is the simplest way to tell a situationship vs relationship vs talking stage apart.
- Talking stage: Weeks, not months. You are getting to know each other and deciding whether to date. Uncertainty is normal and expected.
- Situationship: Months in. You act partly like a couple, but there is no agreement. The uncertainty has become the arrangement.
- Relationship: You have both said what you are, at least to each other. There is a shared direction, even if it is loose.
The key difference is time plus avoidance. A talking stage becomes a situationship when the "what are we" question keeps getting postponed.
What to do with your result
If you scored 0 to 3
Enjoy it, and keep communicating. If you want to be sure, ask a light question: "I'm really enjoying this. Are you seeing anyone else?"
If you scored 4 to 7
You have options:
- Ask directly. "I like where this is going. I'd like to know what we are. What do you want?"
- Set a few boundaries so you feel steadier while you work it out. Our situationship boundaries guide has ten, with wording.
- Check your own answer first. Do you actually want a relationship with this person, or do you want the uncertainty to stop?
If you scored 8 to 12
You are likely giving more than you are getting back in clarity. That does not mean you have to end it today. It does mean you deserve an honest conversation soon. If you are already wondering whether it is time to go, read when to walk away from a situationship.
Take the part of the test only you can answer
This quiz tells you whether you are in a situationship. It cannot tell you how you love, which is the part that decides what to do next. The Map takes about three minutes of taps, lands your dot in one of four regions, and hands you one five-minute card every evening, picked for that region.
FAQ
How do you know if you are in a situationship?
You are likely in one if you have been close for months, act like a couple in some ways, but have never agreed on a label or direction. Avoiding the "what are we" conversation is often the clearest sign. The quiz above gives you a quick way to check.
What is considered a situationship vs just casual dating?
Casual dating is when both people clearly want something casual and have said so. A situationship is when there is no agreement at all, and often at least one person wants more. The difference is honesty about intentions, not how often you see each other.
Is a situationship quiz accurate?
A situationship test can show you patterns, but it only knows your side. Use your result as a prompt for a conversation, not as a verdict about how the other person feels.
Can a situationship turn into a relationship?
Sometimes, yes, usually when both people want more and someone finally says so out loud. Our guide on how to turn a situationship into a relationship walks through the steps.
